About the condition

What you need to know

Surgery fixes the structural problem, but it's rehabilitation that brings back movement, strength and confidence. That's why the outcome of orthopedic surgery depends as much on what happens in the weeks that follow as on what happened in the operating room.

Recovery after surgery happens in phases, each with a different goal. At first the focus is on controlling pain and swelling and protecting what was operated on. Then comes regaining range of motion, then strengthening, and only at the end a return to heavier effort. Skipping steps is what delays recovery the most, and sometimes it sends you back to square one.

The plan follows your surgeon's guidance. When they've set a protocol, that's what we follow. When there isn't one, we go by the healing time of the operated tissue and how you respond to each phase.

What physiotherapy does

How treatment helps

  • Pain and swelling

Managing symptoms in the first few weeks, which is what lets you start moving without suffering.

  • Regaining range of motion

Recovering movement in the operated joint, within what healing already allows.

  • Progressive strengthening

Rebuilding the strength that's quickly lost during immobilization, respecting the phase you're in.

  • Walking and weight-bearing

Coming off crutches and putting weight back on the leg safely, as cleared by your surgeon.

  • Scar and tissue

Work on the operated area so the scar doesn't limit movement or bother you later.

  • Back to your routine

Driving, climbing stairs, carrying weight and returning to work, each one when it can be done without risk.

Step by step

How treatment works

  1. Initial assessment

The first session is a conversation and an exam. We get to know your complaint, your history, any imaging tests you have and what you need to get back to doing in your daily life.

  2. Treatment plan

Based on the assessment, we put together a plan with clear goals, setting how often you'll come in and what you'll also do at home.

  3. Supervised sessions

Every session takes place with a physiotherapist present, correcting your technique and adjusting the load according to how you respond to treatment.

  4. Reassessment

Every so often we measure pain, strength and movement again to see whether the plan is working or needs to change.

Frequently asked questions

Questions we often hear

  • Should I bring my surgeon's report?

It helps a lot. The report, the description of the surgery and any protocol your surgeon gave you make it clear what can already be done and what still needs to wait. If you don't have it on hand, we'll go by healing time and try to get in touch with your surgeon.

  • I started late. Is it too late?

Usually not. Starting late tends to mean more work to recover range of motion and strength, not that recovery is lost. The assessment shows where we can start from.

  • Can physiotherapy interfere with healing?

Not when it respects the phase you're in. Each tissue has its own timeline, and what we do at each stage is chosen precisely to stimulate healing without putting the surgical repair at risk.
