About the condition

What you need to know

After a stroke, the brain is still able to learn and reorganize its functions, and that's what rehabilitation builds on. Purposeful repetition, at the right dose, is what gets movement happening again.

The work is practical and based on what the person needs to do: get out of bed, stand up safely, walk around the house, climb a step, use their hand to get dressed or eat. Each of these goals becomes an exercise, and that's how progress becomes visible.

The first few months usually bring the fastest gains, but improvement continues after that, even years later, as long as the stimulus is there. People who stopped improving have often stopped training, not stopped having potential.

What physiotherapy does

How treatment helps

  • Strength and control on the affected side

Regaining control of the affected arm and leg, starting from the movement that's already there.

  • Balance and falls

Balance training sitting and standing, which gives you the confidence to walk around the house without fear.

  • Walking

Work on walking, weight-bearing and stepping, with or without a walking aid.

  • Using the arm and hand

Reaching, gripping and everyday tasks such as getting dressed, eating and holding objects.

  • Muscle tone and range of motion

Managing spasticity and keeping the joints moving, alongside the doctor's treatment.

  • Guidance for the family

How to help with transfers, positioning and what to practice at home, without overburdening the caregiver.

Step by step

How treatment works

  1. Initial assessment

The first session is a conversation and an exam. We get to know your complaint, your history, any imaging tests you have and what you need to get back to doing in your daily life.

  2. Treatment plan

Based on the assessment, we put together a plan with clear goals, setting how often you'll come in and what you'll also do at home.

  3. Supervised sessions

Every session takes place with a physiotherapist present, correcting your technique and adjusting the load according to how you respond to treatment.

  4. Reassessment

Every so often we measure pain, strength and movement again to see whether the plan is working or needs to change.

Frequently asked questions

Questions we often hear

  • How soon after a stroke can rehabilitation start?

As soon as possible, once there's medical clearance. But starting late is also worth it: function can still improve years after a stroke when training is consistent.

  • My family member can't walk. Is it still worth it?

Yes. Even when walking again isn't a realistic goal at that moment, there's a lot to gain in trunk control, in moving from the bed to a chair and in using the arm. That changes daily life for the person and for whoever looks after them.

  • Do you also treat spasticity?

Yes. We work on range of motion, positioning and movement control, together with the doctor's treatment when medication or injections are involved.
