About the condition

What you need to know

Pregnancy changes the body quickly. Weight shifts forward, the lower back takes on more load, the hip joints loosen and you get out of breath more easily. Well-guided exercise during this time helps with back pain, energy levels and preparing for birth.

What's different about Pilates for pregnancy is the choice of exercises and the positions used in each trimester. Some movements are dropped as your belly grows and others take their place, and the intensity matches what you can handle right now, not what you could handle before.

The assessment happens before any class, and support continues after birth, when the focus shifts to rebuilding core strength and getting back to your routine while carrying your baby.

You need clearance from your obstetrician to start. Bleeding, early contractions, dizziness or any other complication means the class stops and you're referred back for medical evaluation.

What physiotherapy does

How treatment helps

  • Lower back and hip pain

The most common complaint during pregnancy, addressed with mobility, strengthening and adjustments to everyday positions.

  • Breathing and body awareness

Breathing work and awareness of your own body, which help with control during labor.

  • Circulation and swelling

Regular leg and ankle movement to relieve heaviness and swelling at the end of the day.

  • Posture

Adapting to the shift in your center of gravity as your belly grows, to spare your lower back and neck.

  • Core strength after birth

Rebuilding the deep muscles after delivery, with medical clearance and careful progression.

  • Life with your baby

Getting ready to breastfeed, carry and lift your baby without straining your back and shoulders.

Step by step

How treatment works

  1. Initial assessment

The first session is a conversation and an exam. We get to know your complaint, your history, any imaging tests you have and what you need to get back to doing in your daily life.

  2. Treatment plan

Based on the assessment, we put together a plan with clear goals, setting how often you'll come in and what you'll also do at home.

  3. Supervised sessions

Every session takes place with a physiotherapist present, correcting your technique and adjusting the load according to how you respond to treatment.

  4. Reassessment

Every so often we measure pain, strength and movement again to see whether the plan is working or needs to change.

Frequently asked questions

Questions we often hear

  • From what month can I start?

It depends on your obstetrician's clearance and how your pregnancy is going. Many women start in the second trimester, once the nausea passes, and those who already practiced before can usually continue from the start, with adaptations.

  • I've never done Pilates. Can I start while pregnant?

Yes, with exercises chosen for this stage and a more careful progression. Pregnancy isn't the time to break records, it's the time to keep you strong, energized and pain-free.

  • What about after the baby is born?

You return with medical clearance, usually after your postpartum checkup. Work starts again with the core muscles and with realigning your posture, which changes a lot with breastfeeding and carrying your baby.
